Pakistan

Teachers Without Borders' initial commitment in Pakistan (2003) began with an appeal from a few dozen mentor teachers in Sialkot and Rawalpindi.  Our work has grown to become one of our deepest engagements, extending from individual teachers through relief efforts to the designs for teacher education reform supported by the highest levels of government.

Teachers Without Borders is proud to work with PODA to explore ways of expanding educational opportunities for a village that has already gone to extraordinary measures to assess needs arrived at by an extensive resource mapping process.  Mirza M. Nazir, a highly-respected elder, has taken on the job of creating literacy classes for girls from local villages, introduced paper-mache crafts, and made plans to utilize an abandoned building from an Iqra (government school project)which was shut down.

Iqbal International Institute for Research, Education, and Dialogue

On August 1st, 2005, President Musharraf signed a document approving the historic Iqbal International Institute for Research, Education, and Dialogue, an ambitious undertaking designed to promote the concept of "enlightened moderation" through teacher training, public dialogue, and outreach to every village in Pakistan.  The Institute shall be led by Dr. Riffat Hassan, a world-famous feminist the ologian and Islamic scholar.

Teachers Without Borders conceived, and shall supervise, the Education Division, which shall work with selected partners to connect and integrate contemporary teacher training with the vitality of Islam in the spirit of Allama Iqbal.  With this central focus in mind, we shall direct our attention to four strategies and components: (1)  enhancing a mentor teacher corps (2) aggregating, creating, and developing curriculum and teaching materials based upon the research, dialogue, and outreach divisions (3) creating learning opportunities at the village level  (4) consulting with both the Ministry of Education and Higher Education on plans for curriculum review and revision on a national scale.

The Education program is a scalable enterprise, focusing first on mentor training in specific regions, then relying on their collective expertise to build a data-base of expertise and experience, the intention of which is to create curriculum materials and to provide fertile ground for support as we move into the consultative phase fornational curriculum review and reform.

Background: Teachers Without Borders had the honor and pleasure to participate in aU.S. State Department grant won by the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Louisville.  The University of Louisville was the only university in the nation ot receive the grant under a program that was developed after the September 11th, 2001 attacks.  The State Department was so impressed by the proposal submitted by the College of Arts and Sciences that it changed its original plan (which involved several small grants to more schools) and allocated all of the funding to U of L.  In the first part of Phase I, South Asian Muslim  religious scholars, teachers, and preachers visited the United Statesand participated in extensive tours of religious and educational settings.  The Iqbal International Institute for Research, Education, and Dialogue grew out of these meetings, which included President Pervez Musharraf.
